Providing our children with the opportunity to learn and explore within natural spaces at an early age can be one of the greatest gifts we can give in terms of child development. Sensory learning in the outdoors not only teaches kids to respect their environment but it also equips them with problem-solving techniques and motor skills that they otherwise might not have the chance to exercise in a traditional classroom. 1. Focus on self-guided play: if it's going to take help or kids will want adult help (like swings!) opt instead for something they can use in more than one way, completely on their own: like rounds of wood and long loose sticks.
  2. Make it their own: a little hiding space is always a favorite for a lot longer than you might think - even big kids love to hide away in a secret, tiny spot. Allow for spaces for kids to call theirs own.
  3. Keep it simple and stress free. You might have a beautiful play kitchen. Or you might have a pot and a spoon. Make a space that fits your budget and needs and that can be cleaned up or put away easily as required: you'll all enjoy your yard more if no one is stressing!
  4. Leave room for imagination. Imaginary play is a powerful act that helps build communication and relational skills, encourages problem solving, and often incorporates many principles of math, language, science and more. What goes up must come down. Round things roll faster than square things. We need two kids on that side of the stick. This play grows with children and is a wonderful thing to observe.
